The MVP Southgate project is designed to bring a much-needed new supply of reliable, affordable, domestically produced natural gas to North Carolina.

The pipeline will receive natural gas in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, from the Mountain Valley Pipeline, a separate interstate transmission pipeline that starts in West Virginia and has been operating since June 2024.

The route
The amended MVP Southgate project includes a shorter route, fewer crossings of waterbodies, and a wider diameter pipe. These changes incorporate public feedback and allow the project to satisfy the growing public need for natural gas in electricity generation and residential and business uses. In addition, MVP Southgate has eliminated the previously planned compressor station in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

MVP Southgate’s 30-inch diameter underground pipe will span about 31 miles and deliver natural gas into Rockingham County.

PSNC Energy and Duke Energy have signed long-term contracts for the full capacity of the MVP Southgate project, which has a target in-service date of mid-2028.
