The MVP Southgate project was announced in 2018 and is designed to bring a much-needed new supply of reliable, affordable, domestically produced natural gas to North Carolina. This proposed interstate transmission pipeline will receive natural gas in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, from the Mountain Valley Pipeline, which is an interstate transmission pipeline that starts in West Virginia and has been operating since June 2024. The MVP Southgate project recently was redesigned to better serve customers and the public.
What’s new?
The proposed MVP Southgate redesign includes a shorter route, fewer crossings of waterbodies, and a wider diameter pipe than was initially proposed in 2018. These changes incorporate public feedback and allow the project to satisfy the growing public need for natural gas in electricity generation and residential and business uses. In addition, MVP Southgate has eliminated the previously planned compressor station in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
MVP Southgate’s 30-inch diameter underground pipe will span about 31 miles and deliver natural gas into Rockingham County. PSNC Energy and Duke Energy have signed long-term contracts for the full capacity of the MVP Southgate project, which is targeted for completion in 2028.
